A bus on BRT line 60, which runs between Terminal Deodoro and Terminal Gentileza, collided with a pillar of the Elevado do Gasônimo, on Avenida Brasil, near the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (Into), in Rio de Janeiro. The accident that occurred this Saturday morning (21) left 40 people injured and at least 5 in serious condition.

Initial information, the BRT driver was sick while driving so it is suspected to be the cause of the collision. The bus was heading to Gentileza Terminal when it hit a pillar directly.

Witnesses at the scene stated that there were pedestrians crossing the BRT tracks at the time of the accident, which may have contributed to the severity of the incident.

Rescue and care for the injured

Teams from the Fire Brigade and SAMU are on the scene providing treatment to the victims. The driver is trapped in the rubble, making rescue efforts difficult.

Around 40 people were injured, 5 of whom were in serious condition and have been taken to the Souza Aguiar, Miguel Couto and Salgado Filho hospitals.

Caregiver Antônio Mamede, who was on the bus, spoke about the accident.

“With the impact, my face hit the front seat and my back hurts a lot. The bus was full, there were a lot of people standing. The driver was not speeding. I think if he was going at a high speed, it would have been worse,” he said.
