European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced this on Friday at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. She stressed that Brussels has so far allocated at least EUR 2 billion to support Ukraine’s energy security. The funds are provided by member states in the form of financial support and equipment.
“These are, for example, 10,000 transformers and generators or entire Lithuanian thermal power plants, which were dismantled in Lithuania and transported to Ukraine to be operated there. And there will be more,” von der Leyen was quoted as saying by the Unian agency.
Help Ukraine before winter
According to him, the European Commission has developed a plan to help Ukraine’s energy sector survive the winter. This plan is based on three priorities. First, we are talking about repairing the infrastructure destroyed by the Russian attack.
“We will try to restore 2.5 gigawatts of electricity this winter, which is about 15 percent of your country’s needs for this winter,” von der Leyen stressed.
