The Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion award went to Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar’s film “The Neighbors,” the jury announced.
The drama tells the story of two friends who have to face death. Tilda Swinton plays a terminally ill woman who makes a complicated request to her longtime friend (Julianne Moore). She doesn’t want to be alone at the moment of her own death. The film is based on the novel “What’s Happening?” by Sigrid Nunez.
Pedro Almodóvar is Spain’s most internationally renowned director. His film “All About My Mother” won an Oscar in 2000. At age 74, he won another Oscar in 2003 for “Talk to Her.” <옆집의 방>is his first English-language feature film.

Other major awards at the festival went to Australian actress Nicole Kidman for “Babygirl” (Best Actress), French actor Vincent Linden for “Jewel Avec Le Feu” (Best Actor), and Italian director Maura Del Perro, who won the Grand Prix for “Vermiglio.”
The 81st Venice Film Festival is considered one of the world’s top three film festivals, along with the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival. This year, 21 works competed for awards in the competition. The awards were awarded by an international jury. The president was French actress Isabelle Huppert.
