US election: Controversial hand count decided in Georgia

The election commission in the US state of Georgia has decided to count controversial votes at polling stations for the 2024 presidential election in November – despite objections from election officials and poll workers. Allies of former US President Donald Trump implemented the rule at the commission, US broadcaster CNN reports. Critics fear, among other things, chaos on election day and delays in announcing the results in the state, which is hotly contested between Republicans and Democrats, as CBS reports. The vote at the commission was three to two.

Georgia is one of the so-called swing states where the result between Republicans and Democrats is very close. After losing the 2020 election, Trump questioned the vote count in Georgia and, among other things, talked about election fraud. According to CBS, Democrats are concerned that Republicans close to Trump could now prepare a new effort to challenge the election results if Trump loses again by a narrow margin. On November 5, the 78-year-old Republican will face Democrat Kamala Harris.
