The University of Brazil (UnB) approved this Thursday, the 17th, quotas for trans people. According to the decision of the Council for Teaching, Research and Extension, UnB will allocate 2% of the seats in all types of initial undergraduate admissions.

According to the UnB, the target audience for this “affirmative policy” is people who identify and live openly as “trans, transvestites, trans women, trans men, transmasculine or non-binary.”

In addition to the benefit, UnB established a university obligation with “policies of inclusion and permanence.”

“This is another step we are taking in the search for a more democratic and less unequal Brazil,” informed the university’s chancellor, Marcia Abrahão. “UnB is a pioneer in affirmative action. We are the first federal university to adopt a racial quota system. Another unprecedented initiative: the 60mais entrance exam. We have also implemented the Human Rights Policy to guide action on the topic, promoting respect for diversity and acceptance. Now, with the approval of trans quotas, we reaffirm our commitment to justice and a fairer and more supportive country.”
