A police spokesman told German news agencies that a small plane crashed shortly after taking off from Bad Sassendorf airfield in the Soest region of North Rhine-Westphalia. Two people were killed in the accident. They were attending a pilots’ conference at the small airfield.

The cause of the crash was initially unclear. The machine crashed into a nearby meadow. Witnesses rushed to the scene and attempted to administer first aid, a police spokesman said.

67-year-old pilot dies in biplane crash

A small plane had previously crashed in Gütersloh-Spexard, south of Bielefeld, and crashed into the bushes. Police said the 67-year-old pilot had died. He was alone on board. The red and white double-decker propeller plane had taken off from Porta Westfalica in the morning and was heading to Sauerland. No information was initially given about the cause of the accident.

Two men were seriously injured when a light aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Korbach airfield in northern Hesse. The single-engine Piper failed to gain altitude and crashed near the airfield, Kassel police said. It is unclear why it failed to start. The men were taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
