McLaren driver Lando Norris has secured pole position for the Formula 1 race in Singapore. The World Championship runner-up relegated world champion Max Verstappen to second at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Norris also benefited from the fact that the Red Bull star’s previous fastest lap was cancelled following a crash involving last year’s winner Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari.

For Norris, it was his fifth pole of the season. Record world champion Lewis Hamilton was third in a Mercedes. Nico Hulkenberg finished a remarkable sixth in a weak Haas.

Last year’s winner Sainz’s crash in his Ferrari after less than four minutes in the final knockout round put extra pressure on the other drivers. The Spaniard himself was able to get out of his car after the rear hit the barriers. Verstappen was unlucky as a double yellow card was shown at this point and his fastest lap was cancelled. Drivers must reduce their speed significantly during this signal.
