Former Minister of Public Security from 2006 to 2012 Genaro García Luna has at least three arrest warrants in national territory, Interior Minister Rosa Isela Rodríguez announced.

At the morning conference call this Friday, the official detailed the former employee’s time in the federal administration in the 1990s.

Garcia Luna, who was sentenced this Wednesday to 38 years in prison in the United States and to pay a fine of two million dollars, is charged for his participation in the operation, called “Fast and Furious,” Rodriguez said.

He recalled that through this operation, more than two weapons with an implanted chip were smuggled into the country, “allegedly to track their use, which never happened.”

The weapons, he said, along with ammunition, cartridges, explosives and materials for the exclusive use of the army, navy and air force, generated a spiral of violence in the country.

The former official also faces another arrest warrant in Mexico for abuse of power and authority, as well as criminal association in the case of the privatization of federal prisons, which generated property damage to the nation, the interior chief said.
