Biden says Yahya Sinwar’s death is a ‘moment of justice’

Following the death of senior Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by Israeli military forces on Thursday (10/17), United States President Joe Biden said this Friday (10/18) that Sinwar’s death “represents a moment of justice”.

Sinwar held the position of highest authority in the Sunni group Hamas and was considered one of the main architects of the terrorist attack led by the group against Israel on October 7, 2023. The action started the war between Israel and Hamas.

Biden said during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that Sinwar “had the blood of Americans and Israelis, Palestinians and Germans and so many others on his hands.”

“Let’s turn this moment into an opportunity to seek a path to peace, a better future in Gaza without Hamas,” Biden said.

White House spokesman John Kirby stressed that Yahya Sinwar was the main obstacle to securing a ceasefire in Gaza, and the death of the Israeli military created a “tipping point” that could speed up negotiations.

“We believe, we continue to believe, that finding an end to the war is fundamental, and we also believe that Mr. Sinouar’s death … may provide a tipping point to get there,” Kirby stressed.
