Zamość is struggling with the effects of the storm that hit the city. Streets, basements and garages have been flooded. Kindergartens and restaurants have also suffered, among others. The city’s mayor, Rafał Zwolak, announced that a crisis team has been assembled to assess the losses.
Lublin firefighters have so far received around 200 reports of torrential rain in the region. Almost 140 of them concern Zamość and the Zamość poviat.
Most interventions involve pumping water from flooded properties, streets, basements and underground garages. – explained the junior brig. Marcin Żulewski z Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Zamość. These buildings also include public utility facilities, including two kindergartens, a school and a dormitory. In addition, restaurants and a furniture factory were also damaged. – he added.
He commented on the city’s situation on social media Mayor of Zamość Rafał Zwolak. “The entire city of Zamość was flooded once again within an hour. Even new road investments are unable to cope with the removal of such a large amount of water,” he wrote on Wednesday evening.
“Collected the crisis team travels, responds to floods and assesses losses. “Basements and garages are flooded. Unfortunately, weather maps show that the rains will not stop. I am worried about our kindergartens and schools, which suffered damage at the end of June,” admitted the Mayor of Zamość.
Zwolak also posted a recording of one of the schools in Zamość. This shows that water has entered the building.
“First we accomplish everything we can and then I hear hundreds of questions: why can’t wells drain water? This is because there is no place for water to penetrate because there is concrete everywhere. And again we have to cover the losses with our own budget” – Zwolak said in the next entry.
The torrential rain did not spare the Zamość Zoo, which posted photos of the enclosures near the lake on social media.
We were forced to move animals whose facilities were flooded. It mainly houses black and white lemurs and wintering areas for birds. This situation has already happened twice. – he told PAP Director of Zamość Zoo, Grzegorz Garbuz.
Until 2 am from Wednesday to Thursday, the IMWM warning against thunderstorms applies to most of the Lublin Voivodeship. The third highest level alert applies to the central and southern parts of the region.
