Western experts – as Reuters writes – listen carefully to Karaganov’s statements because they are an indicator of what Russian authorities think about foreign, defense and nuclear policy.
Russian political scientist: A nuclear strike does not have to lead to nuclear Armageddon
For over a year, Karaganov has been calling for changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine. The Kremlin recently announced that it would review this doctrine. Currently, Russia can only use nuclear weapons when the country’s territorial integrity or sovereignty is threatened, and in such a situation, Russia can use nuclear weapons even if the attack on Russia is carried out with conventional weapons.

According to Karaganov, the doctrine in its current form is suicidal and irresponsible because it does not sufficiently deter Russia’s enemies. The latter – as the political scientist argues – are convinced that Russia will not use nuclear weapons under almost any circumstances.
It is time to announce that we have the right to respond to a massive attack on our territory with a nuclear strike. This also applies to the occupation of our territory.
Sergei Karaganov
The political scientist argues that with the current doctrine, Russia is heading towards disaster because it runs the risk of “bleeding to death on the battlefield and economic exhaustion”, which could even lead to the collapse of the country.
