Will Robert Kostro, director of the Ministry of Health, be the next victim of the purges?

According to the daily “Rzeczpospolita”, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage may consider dismissing Robert Kostro, the director of the Polish History Museum, who ultimately led to the establishment of this institution. According to the newspaper, the ministry sent “letters to various organizations asking for their opinion on the dismissal of the director of the Polish History Museum, Robert Kostro.”

The government continues to purge cultural institutions. Recently, the following people lost their positions: Prof. Wojciech Fałkowski, who was the director of the Royal Castle, as well as Prof. Mateusz Szpytma, who was dismissed from the International Auschwitz Council.

Will Robert Kostro be fired?

It turns out that the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage may also want to hire the next director. This is Robert Kostro, head of the Polish History Museum.

The Ministry of Culture has sent letters to various organizations asking for their opinion on the dismissal of the director of the Polish History Museum, Robert Kostro (…). They have reached out, among others, to the Association of Polish Museum Scholars, the Polish Historical Society, but also to the trade unions of the Polish History Museum. According to our unofficial information, some time ago Kostro was offered the position of director of the Pilecki Institute, but he did not agree.

Kostro has not yet been removed from office. Although his term of office will not end until 2027, dismissing leaders of institutions before the end of their term has become a standard action of the December 13 Coalition government.

We asked the Ministry of Culture whether the process of dismissing the director of the Polish History Museum has been initiated. We are awaiting their response.

Kostro has been in office since 2006, also during the governments of Donald Tusk and Ewa Kopacz. It was only after the United Right took power that construction began on the Polish History Museum. The director recently announced that the permanent exhibition should be completed by spring 2026.

The following have already lost their positions: Magdalena Gawin (former director of the Witold Pilecki Institute for Solidarity and Courage and former general curator of monuments), Piotr Bernatowicz (former director of the CSW Zamek Ujazdowski) and Prof. Jan Zaryn. After Żaryn was dismissed from the Institute for the Heritage of National Thought. Dmowski and Paderewski, the left-wing historian Adam Leszczyński was appointed in his place, and the name of the institution was changed. From now on it is: Institute for Political Thought. Gabriel Narutowicz.

This is the 24th or 25th administrator illegally dismissed during his tenure.

Robert Kostro had a contract until 2027. Because he built such a wonderful institution, such a wonderful building, despite many difficulties and tensions, I signed this contract with him. Now he is being expelled because it is inconvenient, because… I don’t know, maybe because he talked to me. He was never a member of the political party I belong to. Previously, he cooperated with the governments of Tusk and Mrs. Kopacz for 8 years. (…) We succeeded, we built this museum and Tusk is probably just taking revenge. We built something that he did not build. (…) Unfortunately, this is the current government. This is the primitive revenge of primitive peoples.
