Krzysztof Bosak has surprised everyone. Despite his good results in the presidential elections, the deputy speaker of the Sejm will not be the Confederation’s candidate for president. The politician will support Sławomir Mentzen, who will be the head of the Konfederacja club and is campaigning for the presidency. He has no chance of winning the country’s highest office, but he could be an advantage. If he manages a good third result, the votes of his voters could determine the outcome in the second round of the elections if the fight for the presidency between the candidates of the largest parties is evenly matched.
Is Sławomir Mentzen a better Confederation presidential candidate than Krzysztof Bosak?
However, Bosak surprised everyone twice. A rising politician who is gaining support even among a section of the electorate that does not like the Confederation, has proposed a right-wing primary. In fact, he has proposed two variants. The first is the primaries of the broad opposition in which he would like to run. The second option is to choose a “significant candidate”, as he himself put it on Polsat News, “one who stands out from the PiS candidate”, namely Sławomir Mentzen.
However, PiS rejects the first proposal. In the second variant, the candidate who would really differ from the PiS of the Confederation would be Grzegorz Braun, and the Confederation candidate who would be suitable for a broader spectrum of voters would be Bosak himself. But it is possible that Mentzen will rebuild his support and the party will come up with an idea for a campaign. However, the first variant is more interesting.
Why Jarosław Kaczyński Doesn’t Want Right-Wing Presidential Primaries
The idea of right-wing primaries is foolhardy. Competition between candidates from the Confederation, PiS and other smaller parties could build up the Confederation candidate and the smaller players. Primaries would focus Poles’ attention for weeks, as was the case with Civic Platform in 2010, when Bronisław Komorowski fought for the nomination with Radosław Sikorski.
