Pub chain JD Wetherspoon has yet to secure buyers for a number of sites across the UK, including landmarks in Cardiff, Swindon and Felixstowe.
With new sites added to the sale program since the initial announcement in 2023, the current range of 790 pubs could be reduced by 10 as buyers are sought for selected properties in Scotland, England and Wales.
However, some previously listed establishments have been saved from the hammer and continue to operate as Wetherspoons pubs.
The chain’s Thomas Drummond site in Fleetwood was first put up for sale in February but has recently been taken off the market due to local drinks profits.
Branch manager Claire Buxton said the news would be a “delight” for punters and staff alike. He added: “We look forward to serving the Fleetwood community for many years to come.”
At least a dozen Spoons pubs have already closed, leaving locals looking for a place to compete with the chain’s signature cheap drinks, reasonably priced meals and cozy atmosphere.
The London & Rye Wetherspoon in Catford was the group’s latest closure, closing its doors for good after 24 years on Sunday 25 August. The pub was put up for sale after agent Savills submitted offers from £850,000 earlier this year. .
Despite concerns from banks that the sale may be a sign the pub chain is struggling, owner Tim Martin said the business has largely closed venues that are “smaller and older” or where it has another location nearby.
Sefton Council has recently given the company the green light to open a new Wetherspoons hotel in Southport, adding to the existing 55 town center properties.
Two more new pubs are set to open in England next month, including The Lion & The Unicorn at London’s Waterloo station.
