Despite their popularity among dieters, one doctor has issued a stark warning against weight loss shakes, warning that they can “increase weight gain over time”.
Dr. Rupy Aujla delved into the world of weight loss and weight loss in the latest episode of his podcast, The Doctor’s Kitchen, where he addressed some of the most frequently asked questions on the topic, including the pros and cons of weight loss. His advice was unequivocal: “Avoid them like the plague.”
He elaborated, “They give you a very short, sharp burst of energy and calories that can significantly lower your basal metabolic rate.”
This is the rate at which your body uses the energy it gets from the food you eat.
Reducing this amount means your body uses less energy from what you consume and stores more of it as fat, regardless of whether you’ve lost weight or not.
Dr. Rupy explained, “Even if you eat back the same amount as you did before, because of the calorie reduction, you’ll notice an excess amount of calories, which can lead to yo-yo dieting.”
Rather than resembling traditional yo-yoing, Dr. Rupy explained that yo-yo dieting tends to make you gain weight because of these lower metabolic rates.
This pattern is particularly common in people who are “chronic dieters” or who frequently resort to crash diets.
The health expert issued a stark warning against certain diet aids, warning: “It’s a condition that increases weight gain over time. I avoid weight loss whenever possible.”
Dr. Rupy was even more critical of weight loss shakes than fat loss pills.
He clarified his position on fat burning pills by stating, “With fat burning pills, the dangers do not outweigh the benefits,” however, he did not accept them as a reliable method for sustained and effective weight loss.
Instead, he advocated increasing protein consumption and using fiber supplements alongside products containing both fiber and caffeine.
The doctor even suggested drinking a cup of coffee before training to boost the results.
