Everyone loves classic fresh flavors; ready-made cured meats, cheese and onion, salt and vinegar, but that’s what people often miss.
Prawn cocktail, smoked bacon and Worcestershire sauce are just a few of the other beloved creations, and now Walkers has challenged fresh-faced friends with an even more irresistible flavor inspired by sandwiches.
The brand’s sarnie-themed range includes three unique but widely loved combinations of sandwich fillings and Heinz sauces. As part of a unique collaboration, the two leading manufacturers have developed Sausage Sarnie with Heinz Tomato Ketchup, Juusto Toastie with Heinz Baked Beans and Roasted Chicken with Heinz Mayonnaise.
Express.co.uk’s crunch-loving testers sampled the salty snacks, which drew mixed opinions based on smell and taste.
Even the team’s self-proclaimed crisp-sarnie superfans were critical of one flavor and agreed it was best left out of the new crisp flavors.
Sausage Sarnie Heinz with tomato ketchup
First up was this breakfast classic, a sausage sarnie inspired bag of crunchy treats.
After expecting a meaty, slightly smoky flavor and a hint of ketchup (which must be Heinz), some taste testers were disappointed with the spice ratio. It was agreed that the starter was “like a basic sausage sandwich” – the kind made with unseasoned sausage sandwiched between two pieces of light bread.
The unique flavor of the bread was something wonderful, and unlike any crunchy flavor we had tried before. But the aftertaste is what lets these otherwise fascinating potatoes down.
As for the smell, it’s easy to tell what you’re about to eat as soon as you open the package. The texture of the chips was really crispy and thin in true Walkers style, and overall a must try for ketchup lovers – just not so much for those who like brown sauce on their sausage sarnie.
Rating: 5/10
Walkers Roast Chicken with Heinz Mayonnaise
Perhaps the most desired flavor on paper, this delicious creation utilizes a lunchtime staple – a fried chicken and mayo sandwich.
All taste testers agreed that every ingredient in this flavor was recognizable to the taste buds, especially the tasty grain bread and creamy mayo. The signature flavor of these crisps was roast chicken, an ode to the classic Walkers Roast Chicken range – easy to spot from their bright orange packaging.
The chips are thin and very crunchy, with a herby look, and the taste and aroma scored highly with most taste testers.
Some described these chicken sarnie chips as “really delicious” and “good taste and aftertaste”. In contrast to the taste of sausage, this creation tasted like a “quality chicken sandwich” according to rap fans.
Other taste testers weren’t as impressed with the creamy mayo taste, giving them a lower score.
Rating: 9/10
Walkers Cheese Toastie with Heinz Baked Beanz
The least favorite of the limited edition, Walkers Cheese Toastie with Heinz Baked Beanz shocked the taste testers with its pungent aroma.
Baked bean lovers might find the smell appealing, but it was enough to put off taste testers who don’t like canned goods. Toasted chips with a cheesy base flavor and strong tomato sauce received low marks across the board.
Even the avowed goodies refused to eat more than one, and the package remained almost untouched by the end of the experiment (the same cannot be said for the taste of the chicken).
The taste could not be compared to anything other than a cold can of beans, although it is worth noting that the cheesy taste was more noticeable and pleasant for some testers. All in all, the potato chips received a poor rating of 1/10.
All flavors are available for a limited time only in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Co-op, Waitrose, B&M, Iceland, TJ’s, Aldi, Farmfoods and Poundland. The range of sandwiches are available in 45g bags for £1, multipacks of five for £1.65 or 70g bags for £1.25.
