Waitrose plans to open 100 new convenience stores across the UK

When it comes to grocery shopping, there are many supermarkets to choose from depending on your budget, convenience or preferences.

Supermarket chain Waitrose has announced plans to open 100 new convenience stores in the UK.

The supermarket retailer, which already has 329 stores across the UK, will open new stores over the next five years.

Waitrose is opening stores across England, Wales and Scotland, but has not announced the exact locations.

However, the first store will be in London’s Hampton Hill, opening later this year.

A Waitrose spokesman said: “We know the opportunity is there, but we only have around 45 small Waitrose convenience stores at the moment.”

The supermarket said it would invest £1 billion in expansion plans and improvements to its current 329 stores.

Shore Capital analyst Clive Black commented: “Such stores are easier to get planning permission with better site availability than traditional, larger supermarkets, but they are also cheaper and quicker to develop.”

Aldi recently announced that it will open four new stores by the end of the year. These supermarkets are located in Leytonstone and Beckton and will open in the next few months.

Holloway Road and Muswell Hill are also preparing for new Aldi stores. With the opening, the fourth largest supermarket in Great Britain will create more than 150 new jobs in the capital.

The company has also said it will open even more stores in 2025 to help lower food prices in London.
