Local public transport tickets will become more expensive in parts of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1 January 2025. The local transport association Rhein-Sieg (VRS) has announced that ticket prices in its area will rise by an average of 5.9 percent on this date. The Assembly meeting approved this recommendation.
The VRS explained that in light of the widespread use of the Deutschlandticket on local transport, this measure actually only affects a small percentage of passengers. However, from January 1, 2025, the price of the Germany ticket will also change nationwide from €49 to €58 per month, as the Conference of Transport Ministers has already decided.
The VRS indicated dramatic increases in personnel, energy, and material costs. There are four local transport associations in North Rhine-Westphalia. As with the VRS, January 1 is the deadline for possible fare increases for the Transport Association of Rhine-Ruhr (VRR) and the Transport Association of Aachen (AVV). For the Westfalentarif Transport Association, the deadline is August 1, when ticket prices were last increased by an average of 6.25 percent.
