Vienna – One of Austria’s most important railway lines, the one heading west from Vienna, has resumed service after heavy storms in the past few days, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) announced on Wednesday. This means that train travel between Vienna and cities such as Salzburg and Munich is once again possible. The road was closed over the weekend due to flooding and landslides.
Restrictions have been put in place as damage from floods and landslides continues.
However, both ÖBB and the private Westbahn can only run trains according to a timetable within a limited scope. “Cleaning work is in full swing, but it may still take some time before all the damage is repaired,” an ÖBB spokesperson said.
The storm also caused serious disruption to public transport in Vienna itself. On Wednesday, the city’s subway system of two million people resumed operation after a days-long blackout.
