US Open. Iga Świątek advanced to the round of 16

Iga Świątek advanced to the round of 16 of the US Open Grand Slam tournament. The Polish tennis player, seeded number one, defeated Russian Anastazja Pavlyuchenkova (number 25) 6:4, 6:2. The match lasted one hour and 32 minutes.

Świątek and the 33-year-old Russian, the former 11th-ranked racket player in the world, had already played an official match – last year, at the WTA event in Rome, the Pole, who is 10 years younger, won without losing… a game. This time the match was not so one-sided, but the five-time Grand Slam champion’s advantage was very clear.

Coach Tomasz Wiktorowski’s team traditionally started with a strong attack and broke Pawluczenkova in the first game. Ultimately, this was enough to win the first set. In the second game, the Russian broke twice – in the third and fifth games.

Świątek served very well

Świątek performed very well in all aspects of the game. She served very well and did not have to defend a single break point during the match. She also committed only nine unforced errors, with 19 winning shots. Pavlyuchenkova committed 17 unforced errors and 18 winners.

The Pole’s next opponent on Monday will be Russian 16th seed Lyudmila Samsonowa. Świątek has played her three times and won three times. In the last two matches, she has given up just five games in total.

In the first round, Świątek defeated Russian Kamilla Rakhimova 6–4, 7–6 (8–6), and in the second round defeated Japanese Ena Shibahara 6–0, 6–1.

The 23-year-old from Raszyn is fighting on the courts of Flushing Meadows to repeat the feat of 2022, when she triumphed in this tournament.

Women’s singles 3rd round match result:

Iga Świątek (Poland, 1) – Anastazja Pavlyuchenkova (Russia, 25) 6:4, 6:2.
