Two household ingredients can help revive your lawn and get it in top shape in 2025

Airtasker gardening professionals Leonardo and Domenico recommended checking the pH of the soil when maintaining the lawn.

They said: “Many people don’t realize this is such an important step, but we always recommend testing the soil pH and making adjustments to ensure it is in the ideal range for grass growth.

“Grass needs nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to grow well.”

Testing your lawn’s soil pH at home couldn’t be easier, and it can be done with two household chemicals.

Divide the soil between two containers and start by moistening it with water.

Add baking soda to one sample and white vinegar to the other.

If the soil bubbles after adding baking soda, the soil is acidic, and if it bubbles after adding white vinegar, it is alkaline.

Soil testing can help get your lawn in top condition and keep it thriving by 2025.

Acidic soil can encourage the growth of moss and weeds, which can be unsightly and damage your lawn.

You can make your lawn more alkaline by applying lime granules to the soil, preferably three months before planting new grass, usually in the fall or winter.

Lime is soil made from ground limestone containing calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate.

When added to the soil, the compounds raise the pH of the soil, making the soil less acidic and more alkaline.

Unfortunately, there is no quick way to raise the pH of your lawn and these methods can take a while to work.

However, an acidic lawn is not the only problem, an overly alkaline lawn can also show signs of discoloration and bare spots on the lawn.

Most lawns thrive in a pH range between six and seven, close to neutral, so retest the soil after a while to see what level it is at.

Other ways to test soil pH include purchasing a test kit online, a digital pH tester, or test strips.
