Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate who is campaigning for the first time since the attempted assassination, has linked the incident to his political agenda. At an event in Flint, Michigan, on Tuesday (local time), he called for a 200% tariff on Mexican car imports and said, “So you wonder why I’m being shot? Only consistent presidents get shot.”
On Sunday, the Secret Service shot an armed man who was hiding in the bushes at Trump’s golf course in Florida while the former president was playing golf. The suspect himself fled without firing a shot, but was arrested and charged moments later. Two months earlier, there was an attack on Trump in Pennsylvania. He was slightly injured.
President Trump said the Secret Service did a “really great job” in Michigan, but called for more staff to be added to the agency that protects high-ranking politicians. He said of his calls with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, both of whom were “very nice,” but that “in some ways it would have been better if the calls had never happened.” Trump has previously criticized Biden and Harris for the incident.
On November 5th, the presidential election between Trump and Harris will be held.
