Two years ago, approximately 250 tons of fish were caught in the entire Odra section of the Polish Oder. While in two reservoirs, which are small in comparison to this stretch of the river, more than 110 tons of dead fish have already been caught. If someone claims today, and some media outlets do, that these two situations are incomparable, then yes, they are incomparable. Today’s impact has a much greater impact on these small reservoirs; if we applied it to the entire Western Pomeranian section, we could probably count it as a multiple of these 110 tons.

“They lied to scare the Poles.”
The opposition MP highlighted that when the PiS government stopped the fish killing phenomenon in 2023, applying appropriate procedures, after the change of power “the problem returned with great force”.
In 2022, in addition to the Odra crisis, we were confronted with a catastrophe of hypocrisy and lies on the part of the then total opposition and today’s pathological camp.

Today’s Marshal of Hołownia repeated lies about mercury. This false information caused great anxiety and confusion. I remember that at that time residents started buying water even though they had no reason to do so. They lied to scare the Poles, to scare the inhabitants of the Oder region with the fact that there was mercury in the water. Who trusted Germany more than the PiS government?
During the ecological disaster of 2022, we heard from the then opposition how the German side heroically detected the problem. Was that really the case?
It was the Polish side that, through intensive activities of experts and professors, diagnosed what was causing the mass death of fish. It was golden algae. This investigation was also carried out on the German side, but it was the Polish government, the Law and Justice government, that diagnosed this problem. Neither Marshal Hołownia nor Superintendent Roman Giertych had any confidence in the Polish government, in Polish institutions, in Polish scientists, in Polish experts.

This is extremely significant, this lack of trust in one’s own country, this lack of trust in one’s own experts and the transfer of competences to the German side, even though the German side had no say at the time.

During the 2022 crisis, in the Western Pomerania section alone, we built 30 dams in 17 locations. This shows the scale of the Law and Justice government’s reaction. Well, these two gentlemen, as always, have great confidence in the German side and the Polish experts need to learn, although in this situation it should actually be the other way around.

When in 2022 we diagnosed that the cause of the crisis was golden algae, we released this information, passed it on to MPs, politicians and the opposition. What happened then?
– he asked, recalling the statement by the current Deputy Minister for Climate and Environment, Urszula Zielińska.
She then said that saying that the algae bloom was to blame was a “mockery of reason.” Such statements age beautifully. Both those of Mr. Hołownia, Mr. Giertych and Mrs. Hołownia. Yes, back then what they said was a mockery of reason, a mockery of common sense. It was absolutely unacceptable and was intended only for political gain.

Golińska: River of hypocrisy
The mockery of the opposition politicians at the time, and of the ruling camp today, was, according to the PiS MP, also directed at the Poles.
They lied about the Oder crisis. They were playing with the security of Poles just for their own political gain. But let’s also look at the statements of today’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He said: ‘Not only the fish in the Oder are dead. The whole country under Kaczyński’s rule is dead. PiS is like mercury.’ As we can see, Tusk was also spreading this false information.

Today, the level of Tusk’s hypocrisy is unimaginable. Today we learned from media reports that Donald Tusk is on vacation. Has anyone seen Donald Tusk in Silesia, where 110 tons of dead fish were floating upside down? No, there is no Prime Minister there. Prime Minister Morawiecki was at the scene of the crisis. Meetings and conferences were organized every day to monitor what was happening on the Oder.

In turn, MP Małgorzata Golińska, former Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, emphasized that the actions of the then opposition during the 2022 crisis could be described as “anti-state”.
At that time and today, we were dealing not only with a river of hypocrisy, but even with a lack of interest in the search for truth, but above all, we were dealing with anti-state activities. Because it is scaring the Poles, it is distributing false information about mercury, mesitylene, cadmium, lead, dead beavers, dead storks, about cows that will give poisoned milk when they drink water, it was a conscious action to scare the Poles, to discourage volunteers, fishermen and all people involved in catching fish.

According to MP Golińska, such actions were deliberately intended to “make the catastrophe last”, thus bringing “political profit to specific parties”. How will the current government behave when the ecological disaster repeats itself two years later?
The government claims that it has the situation basically under control. It also claims that nothing has been done for two years and that the Justice Act is once again to blame. At the same time, it forgets that all the services that are currently operating – Polish Waters, the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection, crisis management at the level of voivodes and the Ministry of Climate and Environment, etc. – operate on the basis of detailed procedures developed over the past two years and left by us.

The December 13 Coalition positions itself as the conqueror of the golden algae
The former deputy minister stressed that the PiS government, after the Odra crisis in 2022, developed “detailed operational procedures” and introduced automatic monitoring, which is now used by its successors.
Many activities related to the verification of issued water permits and integrated permits were also carried out. These were inspections carried out by environmental protection inspectors and Polish waters. These were extremely intensive inspections of many stations, but also of local governments in terms of compliance with procedures related to the supply of municipal sewage to the Odra River. It is also worth mentioning that in 2023, the board of directors of KGHM adopted a resolution to prepare a feasibility study for the Post-Mining Water Desalination Plant.

As she recalled, “several experiments” were also carried out during the PiS government, including: the one with perhydrol.
Today, the current government boasts that by using perhydrol in one of the canal locks, it achieved incredible success because it managed to control the disaster.

And yes, many of these substances initially had a very positive effect in terms of destroying the algae, but at the same time, after the freshwater flow, they caused the algae to multiply with a much greater intensity, and at the same time it should be remembered that perhydrol does not have a selective effect, so it does not only destroy the golden algae, but also affects other organisms that are there.

In 2023, when we already had experience, we knew the enemy, we knew the situation that led to the mass killing of fish in 2022, when unfavorable weather conditions began to appear, when we saw that the water levels were low and therefore dangerous, we also controlled the situation. (…) Thanks to this, we managed to avoid this disaster last year. Therefore, we showed that we can control the situation, even if the enemy remains in Odra.
