There are already six confirmed victims of the floods in Romania!

Another woman has been confirmed dead in the Galatsky district; this is the sixth victim of the floods in Romania. The meteorological service warns of heavy rains in the Vaslui district, where the situation was very serious on Saturday.

A deceased person has been identified in the Suhurlui area of Galach County

— notified the General Inspectorate of Emergency Situations. This is the sixth fatality due to flooding.

The worst flooding occurred in the eastern Galatsky district of the country as a result of heavy rains overnight from Friday to Saturday. The second region badly affected was Vaslui County, which borders it to the north.

The Environment Minister said on Sunday that authorities “are on alert” due to possible heavy rains in these areas.

Mircea Fechet, who was first in Galatsky County and from there went to Vaslui County, said that “authorities are closely monitoring the situation.”

In the Vaslui district, rainfall can reach up to 40 liters per square meter, which can be dangerous because the soil has already absorbed a lot of water during previous rains.

We are closely monitoring what happens further north as rainfall is most likely to increase in Iasi, Botosani, Neamt counties

– said Fechet.

He also assessed that there is no new threat to the Galatsky district, which is currently facing the effects of flooding, and that the water level has decreased in many places.

A medical post will be set up in the Galatsky district, near a camp for flood victims. Thousands of homes in the area have been damaged and people have been left homeless. According to local authorities, the floods have affected 5,400 people. The floods have affected homes in 24 communes of the Galacz district.

For the districts of Galach, Vaslui and Iasi, hydrological services have issued a code red, the highest warning, until Monday. In the northeastern regions of Romania, the so-called code orange when it comes to hydrological conditions. Meteorologists, in turn, have predicted rains in the eastern wall, as well as in the west of the country, where Cyclone Boris is expected to pass.

The local structures of the Iasi County Emergency Situations Inspectorate will be constantly on duty and prepared for possible weather phenomena. The situation of elderly and lonely people, as well as the sick and pregnant women should be monitored.

The situation in Hungary

Budapest is bracing for the peak of the Danube wave. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban says his government is ready to face the disaster. But first, the border town of Mosonmagyarovar will have to be defended.

Residents of the Hungarian capital are bracing for the arrival of the peak of the wave. In the coming days, the water level in the Budapest section of the river will reach the third highest alert level.

On Sunday afternoon, Orbán appeared on the waterfront in Budapest. The Prime Minister personally checked the water level in the Danube and reported that the water would rise so high the next day that it would easily cover it, and in two days the level would be another two metres higher. He estimated that three sections would be critical in the fight against the flood: Szigetkoz, the Danube Bend and Budapest itself. He also assured that all the necessary technical and financial resources were available, and that the Minister of Internal Affairs, Sandor Pinter, would be responsible for all the action.

The mayor of the Hungarian capital also warns of the threat. “The biggest flood of the decade is approaching Budapest,” announced Gergely Karacsony in a video shared on his social media profile.

According to the mayor, we must prepare for very serious flooding in the second half of next week, which will require a series of preventive measures. He also announced that the Pest and Buda piers will be closed on Monday at 8:00 pm, and if forecasts are confirmed, they will be flooded with water on Tuesday. He appealed to the capital’s residents to take special care during these days.

The Hungarian Minister of Agriculture, Istvan Nagy, spoke in a similar tone. In a statement published on his social media profile, he said: “The wave is coming, but we are ready! The condition for an effective defense is disciplined work and good organization!

He also stressed that the town of Mosonmagyarovar will be the first to face the disaster. To protect them from flooding, two retention reservoirs will be opened on the night of Sunday to Monday.
