Edmundo González, the opposition candidate in the July presidential elections who – as many predict – won them, has left the country. He flew to Europe aboard a Spanish military plane. He had previously taken refuge in the Spanish embassy in Caracas for several days after the Venezuelan prosecutor’s office issued an arrest warrant against him, accusing him of, among other things, falsifying documents and participating in a conspiracy.
González’s supporters posted online the results of the July 28 vote, which showed that he, rather than incumbent President Nicolás Maduro, had won. The way the election was conducted drew widespread criticism from abroad and led to a worsening of relations with other Latin American countries, which demanded the publication of the full election results.
