Storing carrots and celery in a certain way can help them stay fresh for weeks.
These foods are essential to many meals – from soups to bolognese sauce, they pack tons of flavor and give dishes a nutritional boost.
But if not stored properly, these vegetables can quickly become mushy and soggy. If you’re only cooking for one or two people, this can be especially frustrating because you may not be able to use all of your vegetables before they lose their crunch and flavor.
Luckily, TikToker Davina Cohan — known on social media as @wellnesswithdavina — has shared a clever way to keep veggies fresher for much longer. “This is the best way to store celery and carrots and make sure they’re always fresh and crunchy,” he said.
“Cut them however you like and put them in a container of water. Put a container in the fridge and they stay crispy for weeks.”
She captioned the clip: “Because nobody likes a soft carrot,” followed by a carrot emoji. Meanwhile, one grateful fan replied: “Thank you so much.”
It comes after we revealed how to prevent potatoes from sprouting by keeping them next to fruit. A TikTok posted by @lifetips669 revealed: “Potatoes and apples are good friends. Keeping them together prevents sprouting.”
And technology is supported by science. According to Tasting Table, apples produce ethylene, a natural gas exposure that “can slow or stop potatoes from sprouting.”
The site also recommends avoiding storing potatoes in a warm environment, but instead keeping them “cool, dry and dark”. Don’t refrigerate them, though, because the cold can “trigger the starch in the potato to turn into sugars that can become cancer-causing when cooked.”
You should also be careful what other vegetables you store next to the apples. Ethylene can have the opposite effect on onions, melons, broccoli and peaches. Their high sensitivity to the chemical can speed up their ripening process and cause them to deteriorate faster.
