The advance of the tide in Povoado Barra Nova, in Marechal Deodoro, has once again caused inconvenience to residents and merchants in the area. This week, part of the retaining wall, installed on the edge of Barra Nova by the city council, was destroyed by the force of the sea and the water invaded homes and commercial buildings.

The area’s sea erosion problem is a long-standing one that worsens during times of higher tides and stronger waves. The village of Barra Nova is famous for its bar mouths that open each year in different locations.

In videos circulating on social media, violent waves and water can be seen invading residential areas and flowing along Rua Beira da Lagoa. The strong waves broke down the retaining walls in the area and the water eventually entered homes and commercial buildings, washing away swimming pools and some buildings there.

O Alagoas 24 Hours contacted the communications department at Marechal Deodoro City Hall and is awaiting a decision on the case.
