Portuguese naval doctors rescued a Pole who fainted on board a Polish merchant ship in the Atlantic Ocean, the Portuguese military said. The man “needs urgent medical assistance.”
The rescue operation began after a report from the captain of the merchant shipWhich sailed under the flag of Malta.
According to representatives of the Portuguese army A 63-year-old Pole on board the bulk carrier MIEDWA was in need of help. It is part of the Polska Żegluga Morska (PŻM) fleet, although it flies the Maltese flag.
At the time of the accident, the unit was in the territorial waters of Portugal, near the Azores archipelago.
The man was transferred by helicopter to the hospital at the Lajes military base on Terceira Island. According to the Portuguese army, he was suffering from serious heart problems.
The Portuguese Navy Command specified that the rescue operation was coordinated from two Azorean islands: São Miguel and Terceira.
