The federal government’s operation to repatriate Brazilians in Lebanon is expected to bring in between 230 and 240 people by the end of the week, according to Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) authorized the rescue operation on Monday (30/9).

Details of the operation, coordinated by Itamaraty and the Ministry of Defence, will be published in the coming days. Vieira spoke to reporters during a visit to Mexico and said that priority would be for the elderly, women, children and the sick.

“[Os interessados] They must express a final desire to come. The minister explained that it is clear that priority will be given to the elderly, women, pregnant women, children, the sick and those who are most in need.

The Itamaraty President also confirmed that other flights could be made as necessary. He also commented on the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. On Monday, Israel announced a ground incursion against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

“What worries Brazil is the possibility of violence spreading to the region, which began in the Gaza Strip and now in Lebanon. We have great concern, not only about the large number of Brazilians living in the region, but also about the local population and the unlimited violence.
