Amid the dengue epidemic in several states, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that, “God willing, we will have the summer with the least dengue in the history of the country.” The statement was made last Wednesday, the 18th, during the government’s presentation to combat the disease at the Palácio do Planalto.
Also during the event, Lula stated that his goal was to convey the idea that “every Brazilian citizen is his own doctor in the treatment of dengue fever.” He stated that “we must take care of our own home.”
As of Friday evening, the 20th, there were 6,526,362 probable cases of dengue fever in Brazil. The death toll reached 5,395, and 1,814 people were still under investigation. The data came from the Arbovirus Monitoring Panel of the Ministry of Health.
The states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Goiás and the Federal District account for more than 87% of possible dengue cases in the country.
