CBŚP agents, together with Ukrainian police, liquidated the largest drug production laboratory in Polish history and seized 200 kg of synthetic opiates, which could have led to the deaths of almost 4 million people.

Officers of the Central Investigation Bureau of the Police, together with the Drug Crime Combating Department of the National Police of Ukraine, with the support of the National Prosecutor’s Office, Europol, the EMPACT NPS/Synthetic Drugs platform and the Central Anti-Terrorism Subunit of the BOA Police, carried out the largest operation in the history of European law enforcement agencies aimed at combating the production of synthetic opiates.

As reported by the CBŚP on Friday, as part of the operation, the agents liquidated the largest synthetic opiate laboratory in the country’s history in Poland, where methadone in crystalline form was produced, as well as eight multi-laboratories in Poland and Ukraine, where synthetic cathinones – mephedrone and Alpha-PVP – and methadone were produced.

38 locations where controlled substances, their precursors, chemical products and equipment necessary for the production process were produced or stored were registered.

– reported the Central Bureau of Investigation.

195 kg of methadone were seized

A total of 195 kg of methadone in crystalline form, 153 kg of Alpha-PVP and more than 430 liters of reaction mixtures of various types of drugs prepared for the final production phase were seized. In addition to controlled substances, significant quantities of drug precursors and chemicals necessary for the production of synthetic opiates and cathinones were seized.

According to medical estimates, 195 kg of protected methadone in crystalline form is a lethal dose for almost 4 million adults.

– reported the Central Bureau of Investigation.

As part of the case, seven members of the cartel responsible for the drug production process were detained in Poland and Ukraine and temporarily arrested by decisions of the judicial authorities.

Combating organized drug crime is one of the most important priorities of the Central Bureau of Investigation. So far this year, the bureau has seized more than 13 tons of various types of drugs. This is often the result of complex international operations.

– emphasized the commander of the CBŚP, Insp., during the conference. Cézar Luba.

An unprecedented case

Head of the Department for Combating Organized Drug Crime of the Central Investigation Department, who participated in the case, Deputy Inspector Michał Aleksandrowicz, in turn, emphasized that this is an unprecedented case.

Methadone is a substance that is a synthetic opioid (…) Methadone is also used to treat people addicted to opiates. In the case of a laboratory that was closed in Poland and Ukraine, we are talking about a substance in crystalline form. This is not a form of the substance available on the medical market. It only occurs on the illegal drug market.

– said the sub-inspector. Aleksandrowicz.

He added that the liquidated laboratory was the largest in history, not only in Poland, but also in the European Union.

So far, such laboratories have been closed in Latvia. There have been two such laboratories so far – in 2017 and 2020. The scale of production in these laboratories was much smaller.

– observed the sub-inspector. Aleksandrowicz.

The CBŚP stressed that the exchange of information through Europol, as well as the financial support of the European platform EMPACT NPS/Synthetic Drugs, played a key role in the operation.

The equipment needed to carry out the operation was made possible thanks to the Crystal Palace project – “Strengthening the activities of the EMPACT NPS and Synthetic Drugs platform within the framework of the EMPACT 2022 instrument” managed by Poland, the Netherlands and Italy and financed by the European Union Internal Security Fund.
