New light has been shed on the season two finale of “Rogue of the Dragon,” by Elio Garcia, co-author of the books “The World of Ice and Fire” and “The Reign of the Dragon.” Garcia also runs the website Westeros.org. He admitted that it was obvious from the beginning that there would be ten episodes in the new season. However, a month before filming began, HBO cut the number of episodes to eight, and did so just as work on the script was nearly complete.
This did not give the writers a chance to make changes to the plot so that the story told in the season would have an introduction, development, and ending. Episodes nine and ten were cut, so the plot of the season ends and leaves viewers without a conclusion. This solution will also pose a problem for the writers when working on the third season.
Episode eight was never supposed to be the season two finale. The writers didn’t have a chance to make any changes because when HBO decided to cut the number of episodes, there was a US writers’ strike and they couldn’t work. So the script wasn’t rewritten and improved, it was just “cut”. That’s why we’ll see the Battle of the Gorge in season three.
