Recipients of citizen benefits will soon have to expect higher penalties if they refuse to work. The Federal Cabinet introduced similar tightening measures. Anyone who refuses work, training or reasonable measures without good reason will, in the future, immediately have to expect a further reduction in basic security of 30 percent for three months.

The benefits of beneficiaries of citizens who have performed undeclared work should also be reduced. Duty stations should be obliged to report undeclared actions to the Customs Administration. Employment Minister Hubertus Hill (SPD) said anyone who did not surrender or cheat on undeclared work “should expect harsher consequences”.

The changes must still be approved by the Bundestag in the usual legislative process, and are expected to come into force at the beginning of the year.
