Germany’s Christian Democrats have broken off talks with the government in Berlin on a common approach to asylum and migration policy, Reuters reported. The Christian Democrat bloc believes the restrictions proposed by Olaf Scholz’s cabinet do not go far enough.
The government’s proposals are insufficient
Germany’s Christian Democrat opposition bloc CDU/CSU has broken off talks with Olaf Scholz’s government over a common approach to asylum and migration policy, Reuters reports, citing a Christian Democrat negotiator. CDU politician Thorsten Frei was quoted as saying the government’s proposals regarding asylum seekers at the state’s borders did not go far enough.
Previously, the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag demanded that Scholz’s center-left government start sending back significantly more migrants seeking asylum at the borders as a precondition for future negotiations.
Controls at all German land borders
A debate has been going on in Germany for several months about tightening migration laws, which was intensified by the attack in Solingen on August 23 this year. The attacker, 26-year-old Syrian Issa al H., attacked people with a knife during the festival, injuring and killing random participants.
On Monday, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser ordered temporary checks at all German land borders and outlined a plan to turn back people who are not allowed to enter the country.
