Doing laundry can be a hassle, not to mention an expense, but you don’t have to let it break the bank if you’re in the know.
Washing machines are essential to our everyday lives, but the Energy Saving Trust has named them the top ‘energy-guzzling appliance’ in your household that could send your electricity bills through the roof if you’re not careful.
According to their data, these essential appliances consume a whopping 14 percent of your household electricity bill.
But there is good news – cutting back on detergent usage and choosing specific wash times can help keep costs down.
It has been revealed that there is an optimal ‘magic hour’ for lighter laundry on your wallet, but many homeowners are unaware and missing out on the savings.
Most Britons do their laundry when costs rise, with a staggering 85 per cent loading their machines during the most expensive window between 8am and 10pm, as Dr Beckmann’s team points out.
Plus there’s a premium slot where electricity prices go even higher – between 4pm and 7pm, which is the time chosen by one in ten Brits.
So, what’s the skinny on those “magic hours” of more frugal energy use? Professionals advise that for cost-effectiveness, throw your clothes in the washing machine in the wee hours of 22:00 and early in the morning at 8:00.
However, for safety reasons, starting the washing machine during a nap is not recommended. therefore the most reasonable “magic hour” is between 7 and 8 o’clock.
Experts have revealed that only 15 percent of consumers take advantage of the so-called “magic hour” when energy costs are at their lowest.
Interestingly, energy suppliers increase charges during peak times when everyone increases their consumption.
Dr Beckmann spokeswoman Chloe Baker explained: “This ‘magic hour’ gives you enough time to load and empty the washing machine before you leave for work or the school run.
Chloe highlighted the double benefit: “By doing a ‘magic hour’ of washing, you can help keep costs down and ensure your clothes stay fresh and clean all year round.
The deciding factor in whether you pay less in these early days will ultimately depend on the price you choose.
Savvy consumers who opt for specific tariffs and modern smart off-peak pricing can enjoy significant savings by taking advantage of lower electricity prices during periods of reduced demand.
