Bed linen is a pain to wash, but the job has to be done, especially if you suspect you have bed bugs or want to prevent them.
Dr. Jonathan Kirby, NOPE!’s pest specialist, warned that bed bug problems have increased in September and has stressed the importance of regular inspections for these pests.
He advised: “Bed bugs like to hide in small, dark areas. That’s why it’s so important to clean household items regularly and check regularly for signs of bugs.”
He also suggested nocturnal inspections, saying, “They’re nocturnal, so try to check at night if you want them crawling all over your mattress.”
Kirby continued, highlighting signs of bites: “Also look out for noticeable marks on the body, such as flat, red spots in lines or wrinkles, blisters that may itch, red rashes, and small areas of heavy bleeding on the skin.”
To reduce the risk of bites, he recommends covering exposed skin if you suspect an infestation.
For those concerned about their sleeping space, Dr. Kirby said to look out for dark, mottled stains on mattresses or bedding that could be a sign of trouble.
Other signs of a bed bug problem include a musty smell and finding shells around.
While getting rid of bed bugs isn’t impossible, Dr. Kirby emphasizes vigilance and regular bedding washing to keep these unwanted guests at bay.
The first step is to shake out all bedding and clothing outside to dislodge eggs, shed skins and dead bedbugs.
He then advises washing all affected bedding and clothing at an “ideal” temperature above 60 degrees to kill lingering pests.
Next on the expert’s list is a thorough vacuum of bed bug-suspected areas of the home, including mattresses and the vicinity of beds.
They warn that bed bugs can also hide in kitchen garbage cans, so it’s important to empty the vacuum and quickly collect the waste outside the house.
After cleaning, it is recommended to apply an effective bed bug killer to the furniture and fixtures, which can keep them away for up to three months.
The pest control guru elaborated: “The best way to avoid infections is prevention. Remember to vacuum mattresses and bedding regularly, paying special attention to seams and corners, and to repair cracks in walls, baseboards and all small defects where bed bugs can get stuck.
“Also, before bringing items into your home, such as second-hand furniture and party wear, check for signs of bedbugs.”
