The best dog pubs were revealed after a nationwide survey

When you want to buy the pooches a round, Nottingham’s pub leads the pack – it’s just been awarded Britain’s best dog-friendly pub.

The research reveals that three out of five owners wish that all pubs would suit them.

Aptly named Ella Wolfenden, landlord of The Lion at Basford, said of the award: “We’ve always rolled out the red carpet for canine customers, from the dog ice cream to the first aid kit behind the bar.

“We have created an environment where dogs can socialize, eat, drink and enjoy the pub just like their owners.

“We are very proud to see how much the dogs love here.” The award was presented to the venue by Rover, an online marketplace for pet care.

Adem Fehmi, its dog behaviorist, said: “Our 11 pet owners testing at the Tavern have been busy in pubs around the country.

“Having received very high marks for factors such as dog facilities, hospitality and dog-friendliness, we are delighted that The Lion at Basford has been recognized for their efforts to make their pub a wonderfully welcoming place for dog lovers.”

Neighboring pub The Burnt Stump in Arnold, as well as West End Bar in Pittenweem, Fife and The Punch House in Monmouth received high praise.

Other regional puppy pleasers included: The Chequers, Stevenage; British Oak, Birmingham; The Spindle & Thread, High Wycombe; The Dog and Gun, Knayton, North Yorks; The Keel Row, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland; The Hope & Anchor, Bristol; The Maltings, Warrington; and Lord Palmerston, Tufnell Park, North London.

Meanwhile, seven out of ten regulars in the survey said four-legged friends make great icebreakers with other drinks – and three out of five believe they have better company than children at drinks.
