Sweden allows grandparents to take paid leave to care for children. Parents can transfer parental leave to their relatives.
Sweden has passed a new law: Grandparents can now take paid leave to care for their grandchildren. Parents have the option to transfer their parental leave to a family member or friend, who will then continue to receive 80 percent of their salary.
According to the Daily Mail, parents can provide up to 45 days of paid leave to relatives or friends. Minister for the Aged, Anna Tenje, said: “These changes allow older people to shape their own lives while strengthening ties between children and close relatives.”
The law also increases the number of “double days”
Sweden was the first country to introduce paternity leave in 1974. Single parents are now also allowed to transfer their parental leave for up to 90 days. The Daily Mail reports that the law also increases the number of “double days” both parents can take at the same time, from 30 to 60 days. This “double day” can be used until the child is 15 months old.
