Development Minister Svenja Schulze explains:“Ending world hunger remains a major challenge for the international community. In a world where there is enough food for everyone, we cannot accept that people cannot satisfy their hunger.
Fortunately, the report, along with all its concerns, also contains some encouraging findings. These include progress on gender equality. Although women are still disproportionately affected by hunger than men, the gap has narrowed.
The experience of South America, and Brazil in particular, shows that hunger can be solved. Governments and political action can make a difference. The government led by President Lula has reduced hunger in Brazil by 85% compared to the previous year, making a tangible improvement in the lives of millions of people. The methods of dealing with hunger are well known. This can be achieved through social programs, development opportunities, school meals, and the ability to grow one’s own food.
Brazilian people G20The President now wants to spread these good recipes around the world through a new global alliance against hunger and poverty. This is the right plan at the right time. Germany will do its best to make this happen. We G7We can build on a lot of the preparatory work that the Alliance for Global Food Security established two years ago by the Presidency by bringing it into this new alliance, including the prevention plan, the planning tool, etc.”
