STF opens investigation into former minister Silvio Almeida

Minister André Mendonça, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), opened an investigation this Tuesday (17) to investigate allegations of sexual harassment against the former Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Silvio Almeida.

By opening the investigation, Almeida will respond to the allegations in the STF even after being fired by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In opening the investigation, Mendonça understood that the case must be processed in court because the allegations occurred while Almeida was still in office.

The allegations against Minister Silvio Almeida were published by the news portal Metrópoles on September 5 and confirmed by the Me Too organization, which works to protect women victims of violence.

Without disclosing names or other details, the entity said it served women who claimed they had been sexually harassed by Almeida. According to the allegations, Racial Equality Minister Anielle Franco was among the women who were harassed.

Defense

In a statement issued after the allegations were made public, Silvio Almeida said he “categorically” denied the allegations, which he called “lies” and “absurd conclusions” aimed at harming him.

In his statement, the minister said that “every complaint must have materiality” and expressed his sadness over the whole situation.
