Two animal rights groups said the whale Hvaldimir, suspected of spying for Russia, was shot, the BBC, CNN and NBC reported on Wednesday. Both groups reported the incident to Norwegian police.
The famous Arctic beluga whale was recently found dead off the southwest coast of Norway.
The organizations One Whale and NOAH state that the animal was the victim of a “heinous crime” – reported the BBC.
“He had multiple gunshot wounds to his body,” One Whale founder Regina Haug wrote on social media. “We will fight for justice for Hvaldimir,” she announced.
