Snails can squeeze through even the tiniest of cracks, meaning they can take comfort in your home during the night.
They may use your apartment, especially if you have a basement, for shelter and to look for food.
Snails could be attracted to pet food at home, trash, cardboard, paper and plants.
One horrified Reddit writer revealed her ordeal after coming home from a night out.
“One terrible night, we came back late to find a whole line of them getting into the kettle, like some kind of slow-motion Hitchcock movie,” the Reddit writer wrote.
In addition to blocking all entry routes, such as holes in walls, there is one simple trick that seems to work for people who face a similar predicament.
“We used to come downstairs to 20-30 slugs every morning. We accidentally left the light on one night and nothing. The lights have been on every night since and the slugs are gone,” another commenter revealed.
A Reddit user wanted to try a light hack, and to their surprise, it worked. The user noted that in the morning after leaving the light on, there were no signs of a snail.
Another commenter agreed: “My success before was simply leaving the light on in the kitchen at night.
“I have an energy-saving lamp and an energy-seven meter, so it costs very little. For some reason, they only come out when it’s dark.”
More and more people agree that leaving the lights on prevents slugs from leaving a slime trail in your home, but what if you don’t want to leave the lights on all night?
Oxford City Council recommended closing access points, removing food sources and addressing any condensation or moisture problems in the home.
“Copper tape or strips can also stop them because they give an electric shock when they touch,” Oxford City Council noted.
