Why dancing is banned on All Saints Day in some places

All Saints’ Day is the holiday dedicated to deceased saints. Faithful Christians often gather on November 1 and visit the graves or attend a grave dedication.

In order to celebrate this day in silence and express mourning in an appropriate way, dancing events such as private parties, visits to discotheques and concerts are prohibited on All Saints’ Day.

This law also applies to non-Christians, but not in all federal provinces. In Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, dancing and celebrating All Saints’ Day are not allowed, as these regions are predominantly Catholic.

Exact regulations and hours may vary from country to country. Anyone defying the dancing ban will face a fine of up to €1,000.
