Should the parking area be enlarged?

Therefore, the French Association for Standardization (Afnor) launched, about ten days ago, a consultation with car park operators, real estate developers and even communities to redefine the standards for the size of car parks. These standards apply voluntarily and serve as advice, there is no obligation to respect them on the part of manufacturers, but they provide a precise indication of the existing situation.

“Vehicle sizes have increased significantly and the current use of parking spaces is not the same. We need to rethink the space, but also the traffic corridors, the height, the cohabitation with bicycles and electric vehicles,” said Christelle Henao, development manager in the construction sector at Afnor, quoted by “Le Bien Public”. He also explained that the idea is not to renovate the existing parking lot, because that would be too expensive and complicated.

Heated debate

Therefore, discussion meetings should be held between various stakeholders. But the debate is expected to heat up between car park operators, who want more space, and developers who see it as a drawback. The association wondered whether this would not encourage users to buy ever-larger vehicles, thereby causing more pollution.
