Munich police are urging residents to avoid the area where the operation is taking place. The police operation includes, among other things, a helicopter to provide a “better picture of the situation”.
Israeli Foreign Ministry: None of the consulate staff in Munich were injured
The Nazi Documentation Center documents the history of Adolf Hitler’s regime in Germany. It is located near the Israeli Consulate General in the Maxvorstadt district.
Munich police reported that their officers fired at a suspicious person in the area of the Consulate and the Israel Center. As a result of the police shooting, the suspect was shot – the police did not give any further details. They only emphasized that there is no evidence that other people were involved in the incident. However, the police report that due to the incident, the police presence on the streets of the city has been increased.
Bild reports that at least one person was injured. According to the German daily, the perpetrator arrived at the Nazi Documentation Center with a long gun. He then began shooting at the police officers guarding the building, who returned fire.
Benedikt Franke, deputy director general of the Munich Security Conference, whose office is located near the scene of the incident, said that at around 9:10 a.m. a loud explosion was heard, followed by at least a dozen gunshots. Employees of the office are currently not allowed to leave the building.
