An activist for the Swiss Green Party, Sanija Ameti, has boasted online about photos of herself photographing a painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. She is, of course, an immigrant from a Muslim family in Bosnia and has previously opposed the anti-terrorism law.
The Swiss politician shared the shocking photos in the context of the Shooting Festival that took place in Zurich, in which the organization Operation Libero, co-led by Sanija Ameti, also participated.
When the unprecedented blasphemy case became public and caused an avalanche of outrage, the 32-year-old Liberal Green activist deleted her post from social media, explaining her decision because “someone might feel that their religious feelings were hurt”.
Ameri later explained that she was not paying attention to what the painting depicted and that she simply needed a target on which she could test her vision from a distance of 10 meters. Ameri’s explanations are unreliable because she fired approximately 20 shots into the faces of the Madonna and the Child Jesus and had to reload the gun after each shot.
Immigrant and liberal politician
Swiss Green politician Sanija Ameti was born in 1992 in Bosnia and Herzegovina into a Muslim family, although not particularly religiously committed. She was raised by her father, who was a biology professor and politician in the former Yugoslavia. The family emigrated as refugees to Switzerland in 1995. Ameti holds a law degree from the University of Zurich and can also boast a doctoral thesis on cybersecurity written at the University of Bern.
A few years ago, the woman became involved in political activities alongside the Swiss Liberal Green Party. Her non-governmental organization Operation Libero, with a strongly liberal and pro-EU profile, opposed the Swiss anti-terrorism law and organized an action to support the idea of so-called same-sex marriages.
Sanija Ameti is a city councilor in Zurich, but failed in her candidacy for the Cantonal Council.
A report was submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the blasphemy scandal she suffered.
