OpenAI analyzed their relationship
She briefly told her followers how she used the OpenAI bot to analyze herself and her partner.
“You can take screenshots of your text messages and post them on ChatGPT,” she told users. In my case, the chat said my partner had an avoidant attachment style and that I was mature.
This simple yet moving experiment has been praised by many internet users, sparking a discussion about the effectiveness and ethics of using artificial intelligence for such intimate purposes.
“I even tried the chat, asking him questions that I would normally ask a therapist. Then I had the idea of sending him screenshots of the texts and seeing if he could analyze them from the perspective of attachment theory and relationship therapy,” said Sellers, who appeared on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
What about emotions?
To investigate this emerging trend, Newsweek reached out to Dr. Debra Castaldo, a marriage and family therapist in New Jersey, for comment.
“Even though AI and ChatGPT are all the rage, I’m not a fan of evaluating real human relationships through apps,” Castaldo told Newsweek.
She says the complexity of attachments and relationships are factors that AI-based tools can miss. Reflecting on her virtual therapy sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic, Castaldo highlighted the subtleties that make human interactions unique — and that she says cannot be fully captured or interpreted by AI.
“Seeing someone online is completely different than when you’re there and can feel the resonance of the other person in person,” she said. “Then there are observable nuances: eye contact, tone of voice, breathing, physical touch. These are human characteristics that we know create a secure bond.”
The salespeople’s TikTok video is part of a broader trend of people seeking innovative tools to gain insight into their lives. For many people, artificial intelligence offers the tantalizing promise of objective analysis that can feel faster and more accessible than traditional methods, such as hiring an expensive therapist or sharing posts on social media platforms like Reddit.
Last year, the average cost of a therapy session in the United States was around $100 to $200, making it inaccessible to many people, especially young adults and teens. On the other hand, AI-powered tools are often free or low-cost and available 24/7.
Despite its appeal, Castaldo worries that excluding the “irreplaceable” human connection could pave the way for the potential pitfalls of over-reliance on technology for deeply personal matters.
Although the therapist expresses caution, Sellers’ video, which encourages viewers to consider whether artificial intelligence can solve the psychological puzzles that intertwine relationships, continues to gain traction online.
Sellers believes this application of ChataGPT could provide a new way to approach self-awareness and communication in relationships. Castaldo disagrees. The relationship expert knows that while AI-powered tools can offer a broader perspective, the core of human relationships lies in nuanced experiences that technology can’t yet replicate.
“Let’s leave it to AI and ChatGPT to create more factual information,” the therapist said. She added, “Let’s keep people in human, loving relationships.”
