Samsung is working on a smartphone with a large, rollable display that could arrive next year, according to a report. The phone is expected to feature a flexible screen that can be unrolled to create a much larger display. If the alleged launch timeline is accurate, the device could arrive six years after the company introduced its first foldable smartphone. Samsung has not yet announced plans to introduce such a device, but the company has previously revealed new display technologies, including a hybrid device that folds and slides at the same time.
Elec reports (in Korean) that Samsung is developing a phone with a rollable screen that can expand to a 12.4-inch display — almost as big as some Android tablets. Such a device would also be larger than the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design , which was recently unveiled in China with a 10.2-inch screen.
The device is also rumored to feature an under-display camera (UDC), suggesting the foldable phone will not have a camera cutout, offering an uninterrupted viewing experience. The device’s large display combined with UDC technology could result in a high price tag for Samsung’s alleged foldable phone.
This isn’t the first innovative foldable display Samsung has unveiled. Over the past few years, the South Korean tech conglomerate has shown off new foldable phones that fold inward twice, like an alphabet G, while another prototype folds into a Z shape. The company has also received patents for phones with rollable and triple-foldable screens.
Samsung recently overtook Huawei — the Chinese company earlier this month launched the Mate XT Ultimate Design, the world’s first tri-foldable smartphone, while a commercial version of Samsung’s triple-foldable screen has yet to be unveiled.
According to a report from Elec, Samsung has set its sights on rollable phones. The company is expected to launch the phone in the second half of 2025. We can expect more details about the device to be revealed in the coming months.
