Russian plane enters Japanese airspace and is turned away

A Russian reconnaissance plane was intercepted by Japanese fighter jets on the grounds that it was in Japanese airspace.

Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-15 and F-35 aircraft successfully visualized Russian patrol aircraft Il-38 aircraft and repelled them with flares, the Japanese Defense Ministry said. “Russia flew our airspace over our territorial waters north of Rebun Island.”

Although the Russian aircraft was not a fighter jet, it was a concern for Japan because the aircraft was flying in their territory to carry out a reconnaissance mission.

Tokyo has made several complaints to Moscow about such incidents; since 2019, Japan has intercepted Russian aircraft more than three times over its territory, as in the case of the Tu-95 flying over southern Okinawa, according to Japanese authorities, and from there they have sent a serious message to the Kremlin.

On this occasion, the aircraft were successfully driven away with flares and radio warnings, but the Japanese Ministry of Defense was adamant about preventing a recurrence of this incident.
