“There were quite a few blockades in Pointe-à-Pitre, but no looting” during the night between Saturday and Sunday, when electricity had not yet been restored to the entire territory, said Alexandra Onfray, Pointe-à-Pitre’s deputy prosecutor.
Police made “three arrests” in Abimes, north of Pointe-à-Pitre, “for the burning dams”, she added. One of those arrested was “pushing a vehicle to try to set it on fire,” according to Ms Onfray. Around 10 “burning blockades with rubbish bins” were seen in that stretch between 8pm and 3am, she said.
“Unacceptable urban violence”
On the Gosier national road, east of Pointe-à-Pitre, a dam was “made of tires and stones”, the magistrate said. “Three barricades” were also installed in Moule, east of Guadeloupe, where police and firefighters who came to control a “tire fire” were targeted by projectiles, Alexandra Onfray stressed.
Various fires were reported in Lamentin, while in Baie-Mahault a jewelry, perfume and handbag store was attacked “with a grinder,” according to the deputy prosecutor.
